Masterton container gallery and studios to open in December
Construction has begun to transform a high-profile site in central Masterton into a container gallery and studios where aspiring and established Wairarapa artists will create and showcase their work.

Community building transformed into modern health centre
A community-owned property that a year ago was at risk of demolition, has been transformed into a modern health centre as the new home of Whaiora, Wairarapa’s Māori health service.
Education priorities funded
Education grants of $246,000 have been approved by the Masterton Trust Lands Trust under new funding priorities it set late last year together with the education community.
Grants funding limited
Grant funding from community-owned Masterton Trust Lands Trust will this year be limited to education, Aratoi and the arts, with the usual annual community grants round being unavailable.
Buildings offered for sale
Six properties owned by the MTLT are to be offered for sale following a review of the trust’s property portfolio.
Dr Greg Haslett
Former Alan MacDiarmid Scholar and Wairarapa College student, Dr Greg Haslett, has followed an outstanding pathway since receiving the Scholarship in 2006. With MTLT’s assistance, Greg completed a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry from Victoria University in 2009. In 2014, Greg completed further university study including a PhD at the University of Cambridge. 2017 – Robert Spite
Former Rathkeale College student, Robert Spite, received the Alan MacDiarmid Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Auckland. As the top Chemistry Student in the region in 2016 Robert receives $1,000 per year to assist with his studies. The annual scholarship recipient is decided by Principals of colleges in Wairarapa.
Education priorities confirmed
Priorities for MTLT education funding until 2019 have been confirmed following a review of past funding and consultation with the education community over the last year.
Legal action begins over buildings
MTLT has begun High Court action seeking to recover the costs involved with remediating structural shortcomings of two of its buildings that have been found not to meet the seismic design standard for new buildings.
Strong financial result
The value of property assets owned by the Masterton community through Lands Trust Masterton has increased to a record $71 million, one of several positive results for the 2016 financial year.
2016 – Aqeeda Singh
Wairarapa College 2015 Dux, Aqeeda Singh, was awarded the 2016 Alan MacDiarmid Scholarship to help with her study in Health Science and eventually Medicine at Otago University. Only the second female to receive the scholarship since it was first offered in 2002, Aqeeda was Masterton’s top Chemistry student in 2015.
2015 – Edward Barnett
Edward Barnett, former Rathkeale College student was awarded the Alan MacDiarmid Scholarship to assist with his study for a Health Science Degree at Otago University. Edward received $1,000 per year for three years.
2014 – William Rogerson
The 2014 Alan MacDiarmid Scholarship was awarded to William Rogerson to contribute to his study of a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Auckland. William is a former student of Wairarapa College, St Patricks School and Masterton Intermediate School.
Developing maths teachers
MTLT-funded collaborative initiatives in the early childhood, primary, intermediate and tertiary sectors provide professional development for teachers. In 2014, Lead Maths Teachers from Masterton Primary and intermediate schools upskilled in extension activities and problem solving. These teachers were then equipped to lead further professional development for teachers in their own schools.
