Who Can Apply
Our School Event Grant is available to support early childhood centres, kōhanga, schools, and kura in Masterton to provide events that educationally benefit students within the Trust district.
The intention of the grant is to support events that bring students together for educational purposes. This may be within a single school or across several schools. School events that cater to one school only are limited to one grant per year.
Examples of events that have previously been supported include the Mathematics Competition, Photography Competition, and Student Led Conference Day.
The School Event Grant does not support travel to attend activities outside Masterton, sports trips, or catering.
Conditions
Application Process
Complete the School Event Grant application form and submit. Applications with less than four weeks notice may not be considered.
Your application form must be fully completed and include a robust description of the benefits and outcomes your event aims to achieve.
The maximum amount available per event is $1,000. If the event is expected to cost more than $1,000, please provide evidence of confirmed funding for the balance. An event budget must accompany your application.
Monitoring & Reporting
The Trust requires a post-event evaluation report to be submitted within one month of completion of the event. This report should include details of what was achieved, who attended, numbers attended together with a summary of how the funds were spent. Photos of the event are appreciated.
Any deviation from the original application needs prior approval from the Trust.
Grant funds not used for the intended purpose will be required to be reimbursed to the Trust.

What can MTLT fund?
In keeping with our Act, Trust funds are held to promote, advance and foster areas of education, literature, art and other cultural purposes for Masterton people.
Community grants are available for organisations that provide services, programmes and activities promoting:
- Health and well-being (including mental health and disability)
- Physical welfare (including sporting and recreational activities and coach development)
- Art and culture
- Community services
- Environmental and conservation projects.
These organisations can apply for grants that fund:
- Operating expenses
- Programme and activity costs
- Workshops and events
- Equipment and resources
- Training and development
- Repairs and maintenance
- Support for individuals (if the application is submitted and fully endorsed by their local club/organisation).
Targeted Education grants are available to non-school organisations that provide educationally focused programmes within the Trust district. Priority will be given to programmes with a focus on:
- Early childhood education
- Technology education
- Education for people with special learning needs
- Environmental education.
School Event Grants are available to schools located within the Trust district.
What can my school apply for?
MTLT funds a multi-year, significant education project for schools within the Trust district.
Schools can also apply for a School Event Grant to support events that bring students together for educational purposes. Examples of events that have previously been supported are a mathematics competition, a photography competition, and a student-led conference.
What doesn’t MTLT fund?
- Prizes
- Projects of a non-specific nature
- Expenditure that has already occurred
- Purchase of vehicles
- Projects that benefit communities outside the Trust’s defined geographical boundaries.
- Affiliation or membership fees.

Which grant should I apply for?
The Targeted Education grant supports non-school organisations that provide educationally focused programmes to people within the Trust district. Please note: this grant excludes capital works or one-off events.
Community grants are for Not-For-Profit or local branches of national organisations that provide services, programmes and activities that benefit those living within the Trust’s defined geographical boundaries.
Within community grants, there are two categories:
- Grassroots (applications of up to $5,000)
- Impact (applications of up to $20,000).
For:
- Operating expenses
- Programme and activity costs
- Workshops and events
- Equipment and resources
- Training and development
- Repairs and maintenance
- Support for individuals (if the application is submitted and fully endorsed by their local club/organisation).
Grassroots grants have previously been awarded to the Oxford Street Community Garden Trust for the purchase of a tool shed and to Masterton Toy Library for the purchase of toys and storage containers.
Impact grants have been awarded to Masterton Foodbank and Waiwaste for operating expenses including wages, to the library to purchase books and resources and to Central Wairarapa BMX Club for the final stage of the BMX track renovation project.
What happens to my application when it is submitted?
You’ll receive an email confirmation that your application has been received. Once applications have closed, they are considered by the appropriate sub-committee. Applications are then discussed with the full board and recommended for approval, or declined.
When will I know if my application has been successful?
The applications are considered once the deadline has closed – in line with the annual meeting schedule. Allow four to eight weeks to learn if your application has been successful.
How will I know if our application has or hasn’t been successful?
Once our Board has made a decision, you will receive a formal communication from our grants administrator via email advising of the outcome.
Can our organisation apply for more than one grant?
There have been occasions where an organisation has applied for a Targeted Education grant and a Community Impact grant, and both were successful. Each application will need to clearly demonstrate how it meets each category’s criteria.
What happens to our information when it is submitted to your website?
Your information is stored securely by the Trust. Successful applicants may be contacted for promotional purposes and information from accountability reports may be included in our Annual Report. Private contact information will never be shared with a third party without consent.
